Ichigaya, Iidabashi & Mejiro Area Overview
The European embassies–such as the British embassy and the Belgium embassy–are dotted throughout this area. The area has an elegant town setting. Being close to the Imperial moat, the area is open allowing you to feel connected to nature while remaining within the city.
The Bancho, Koujimachi, Kudan, and Ichigaya areas used to be the areas where–during the Edo era– feudal lords’ placed their residences. The neighborhood is still home to remnants of the Edo era.
The French international school was originally located in Fujimicho in Chiyoda-ku, near Iidabashi Station. This led many families with children to move there to make commuting to and from the school easier. Though the school has changed locations, many French families still reside in the area and there are many luxury rental apartments for expats.
In addition to the gardens of the Imperial Palace, Kitanomaru Park–next to the Imperial Palace–and Chidorigafuchi are also known for their beautiful cherry blossoms. Famous universities, such as Sophia University and Hosei University, are also located within this area.
The luxurious residential properties available in this area have traditionally been detached houses and stately low-rise apartments. Recently however, high-rise apartments with hotel-like services are being built.
