Hiroo Area Overview

After the Meiji Restoration, the Imperial family and the nobility from many prominent samurai families took up residence in Hiroo. With such historically famous residents, it’s no wonder that Hiroo has become the upper-class residential area it’s known as today. Since the end of the Edo period, due to geographical reasons, many foreign embassies were built around the Hiroo area. This has in turn led to the current mixture of an international and high-class atmosphere seen in Hiroo.

Because the embassies of many countries have gathered in this area over the years, embassy staff and families have come to call Hiroo home. This has had the effect of many English-speaking shops and service providers gathering here to provide daily life conveniences to Hiroo’s foreign residents.

While Hiroo is conveniently located near the commercial and business districts of Roppongi, Roppongi Hills, Azabujuban, Ebisu, and Omotesando, it still maintains a quiet and peaceful atmosphere with its urban greenery. Several trendy coffee shops and restaurants can be found throughout the Hiroo area.

Aside from the large condominium apartments, such as Hiroo Garden Hills and Hiroo Garden Forest, Hiroo is home to luxurious and spacious low-rise apartments and detached houses tailored towards foreign expats.

Arisugawa Park, a large public park in Minami-Azabu serves as an urban oasis for the area where everyone can enjoy a bit of peace among nature. In the area are international schools such as Nishimachi International School, and Sacred Heart International School as well and many international preschools. For those who prefer to cook at home, there is the National Azabu Super Market with its variety of international groceries. English bilingual hospitals Aiiku Hospital and Japan Red Cross Medical Center are also close by.

International school buses for the American School, Seisen & St. Mary’s, Tokyo International School, etc. cover this area as well. This is a popular residential area for foreign families and many luxury rental properties for foreign residents.
