Tokyo’s New Special Zone for Corporate Asian Headquarters

Poste date: Wednesday, May 13, 2015

The Japanese Government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government are aiming to attract and integrate prospective industries and foreign companies to strategic areas in Japan. These areas are called the “Special Zone for Asian Headquarters” - foreign companies which register their headquarters in these special zones will be assisted in such terms like preferential tax treatment, deregulation, and a generous package of fiscal and financial assistance.

Foreign companies which register their headquarters in this special area can enjoy the following benefits:
- Subsidizes from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government
- Preferential treatment of Local Tax
- Business and livelihood support in English by specialized support agencies; etc.

With the recent strategic deregulation of some construction laws - including floor to area ratios; the construction of new high-performance office buildings have become active in the special zone areas.

One of the matters of major concern among foreign companies for opening their offices in Japan is BCP (Business continuity planning) against disasters such as earthquakes. But the new buildings in these areas are better prepared and disaster resilient office buildings (equipped with enhanced earthquake resistant structures, back-up power generators, emergency supply storage rooms, and so on).
